The last thing you want to deal with in the middle of a frigid winter night is a furnace that won't kick on. As the temperature in your home begins to drop, of course, you want to get your furnace up and running again as quickly as possible. Before you call your local furnace repair company, however, there are a few things you should do to possibly rectify the problem.
Prevent Freezing Pipes
In addition to your home becoming uncomfortably cold, you also have to worry about pipes in your walls potentially freezing due to cold temperatures and a lack of heat. Take measures immediately to protect your pipes from freezing, such as opening up sink cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom spaces. If you have space heaters readily available, you may also want to go ahead and get these running.
Check the Thermostat
This might sound a little too obvious, but it's always worth checking your thermostat to make sure that your heat wasn't accidentally switched off. If your thermostat runs on battery power, you may also want to pull it out from the wall and replace the batteries to see if this does the trick. It's unlikely that this is the problem, but it's always worth ruling out before you call an HVAC company out.
Clean or Replace the Air Filter
A clogged air filter can prevent your furnace from running properly. When was the last time you replaced your furnace air filter? If it's been more than 90 days or so, then it's probably dirty and due for replacement. Even if you don't have a clean filter readily available, you can try removing the dirty filter and turning the furnace on to see if this does the trick.
Reset the Circuit Breaker
It's also possible that your furnace won't kick on because the circuit tripped. Head over to your home's circuit breaker to check for any tripped switches. Reset any switches that have tripped. If you know which switch controls your furnace, you can also try shutting it off and back on to see if this resolves the issue.
