2 Maintenance Tips for Furnace Owners

by Jamie Shaw

During the harsh winter months, your home's furnace can be an invaluable source of heat. Yet, issues with a furnace may cause it to malfunction, which can lead to your home quickly becoming a very uncomfortable place to be. If you have rarely given much thought to the furnace in your home, you may want to start using some tips to get the best performance possible from your home's furnace.

Keep the Blower Free of Dust

The furnace has a power fan to help distribute the warm air. This blower will need to run the entire time that the furnace is active to keep the warm air circulating. Unfortunately, this component may be prone to suffering problems as a result of dust accumulations.

Removing the dust from your furnace's blower will need to be every few weeks or else it will gather enough dust to malfunction. This excessive dust can cause malfunctions through clogging the system's air intake, which can lead to the motor burning out.

Also, this dust can get inside the furnace, which can lead to mechanical parts becoming jammed. When cleaning the blower's air intake, you should take special care to avoid inadvertently knocking this dust into the blower. Therefore, a vacuum can be the perfect solution for removing this debris without accidentally getting it inside the blower.

Test the Gas Shutoff Valve Regularly

Gas furnaces are among the most common type of heating system for homes in especially cold areas. While gas furnaces are normally extremely safe, it can be possible for them to develop a gas leak. Often, these leaks occur when a component of the heating system or the natural gas lines become damaged.

Due to the hazards that are involved with repairing a damaged gas line, you should retain professional help for this work. However, it may take several hours or longer before these individuals can arrive, which can give the gas leak enough time to become extremely dangerous. To limit the amount of gas that leaks, you will need to be able to quickly turn off the gas valve.

Unfortunately, these valves can become stuck or jammed. To ensure that you are able to easily use this safety device in an emergency, you need to test it every few weeks. By turning the valve off and the back on, you will be able to ensure that you can quickly use the valve to stop the flow of gas into your home.
