Cleaning Out Your Air Conditioning Unit So It Continues Cooling With Efficiency

by Jamie Shaw

If you use an air conditioner inside your bedroom to keep cool on sweltering nights, you will most likely want it to work at its best so you do not suffer from uncomfortable conditions. It is important to take the time in cleaning out your air conditioning unit so it works at its maximum efficiency level. Failing to remove debris can cause the unit to work for a longer amount of time to try cooling the air in the space where it is located. Here are some tips you can use when cleaning out your air conditioning unit so it provides you with necessary cooling when weather conditions are exceptionally warm.

Clean the Exterior of Your Unit to Remove Natural Debris

If natural debris covers the exterior portion of your air conditioner, it will restrict the amount of cool air being emitted into your bedroom. To remove this debris, unplug your air conditioning unit and head outside with a bucket of water with a bit of mild detergent mixed inside. You can then wipe down the exterior with this solution and a microfiber cloth. Dry the exterior of your unit in its entirety before plugging it back in to use.

Clean the Coils Inside of Your Unit

The coils inside of your air conditioner will need to be cleaned off so air can flow into your bedroom without difficulty. Unplug your air conditioning unit and remove the interior cover so the coils are exposed. You can then use a soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment to help you in removing any dust build-up effectively. If this does not do the trick in removing all of the grime, a piece of microfiber cloth can be rubbed gently over the coils before using the vacuum attachment again to remove loosened debris.

Remove and Replace the Air Filter for the Best Cooling Results

It is a good idea to do a check of the condition of the air conditioner's air filter every few weeks when your unit is used regularly. If the filter has a grayish tinge within the ripped or waffled portion, a new one should be positioned in its place. Most air conditioning uses air filters that easily slide from a slot inside of the unit. This will help in the trapping of debris so it does not end up inside of your bedroom. Failing to replace the filter when it gets dirty can lead to a lower output of cool air into your room.
